Here is the least “sexy” way to increase the value of your business while making your day-to-day work life easier – write your processes down and make that documentation available to your team members!

Most companies rely on word of mouth (I call it Tribal Knowledge) for training employees and growing their companies. This can turn into a game of telephone, where information is passed from one person to another and becomes something completely different in the end.

Why is it so important to document your processes?

Just think about it. When a new team member joins your organization, the training cycle is shortened immensely when everyone is trained the same, based on documented core processes. When processes change, the documentation changes and this is made available to all – no questions, no conflicts.

In my past life as a buyer of businesses, I learned a business is much more appealing to a buyer if the main processes are documented and you can demonstrate they are followed by your team.

I know what you are thinking. This will take countless hours with workers lost in endless detail. That’s exactly why many companies avoid doing it and that’s a BIG mistake. It doesn’t have to be that way.

When I work with companies, they learn the value of the 20/80 rule. They learn to identify and name their core processes and systematically document the 20% that brings 80% of the value.

Your final company operation manual should be less than 50 pages.
