Four Action Modes®

Kathy Kolbe was the first to identify four universal human instincts used in creative problem solving. These instincts are not measurable. However, the observable acts derived from them can be identified and quantified by the Kolbe A™ Index. These instinct-driven behaviors are represented in the four Kolbe Action Modes:

Fact Finder – the instinctive way we gather and share information.

Follow Thru – the instinctive way we arrange and design.

Quick Start – the instinctive way we deal with risk and uncertainty.

Implementor – the instinctive way we handle space and tangibles.

The Kolbe A Index result is a graphical representation of an individual’s instinctive method of operation, or modus operandi (M.O.). The numbers in each Action Mode represent different points on a continuum, rather than relative values. Each point on the continuum indicates a positive trait. There is no such thing as a negative or “bad” Kolbe Index result.

Find Out What’s Right About You

There’s a part of the mind that you don’t hear a lot about. It’s what some people call “instincts” or that “gut feeling” when you’re making a decision. Our secret: we know what natural strengths — instincts — you were born with, and how you can use those instincts to be the most productive, stress free version of yourself. Doesn’t that sound great? There’s something already inside of you that can rid the stress from your life, help your relationships, and change the way you interact in the work place. Start with the Kolbe A™ Index. It’s a quick, easy assessment with no wrong answers.  After you answer the 36 questions, you get a personalized result with tips and tricks for how to use your natural strengths.

Kolbe sees every person as uniquely and perfectly capable of creative problem solving.

The Kolbe Concept® holds that creative instincts are the source of mental energy that drives people to take specific actions. This mental drive is separate and distinct from passive feeling and thoughts. Creative instincts are manifested in an innate pattern that determines an individual’s unique method of operation, or modus operandi (M.O.).

When people act according to instinct, their energy is almost inexhaustible – like water running downhill. But when people are forced to act against their instinct, their energy is rapidly depleted – like water being pumped uphill.

Individual performance can be predicted with great accuracy by comparing a person’s M.O. with self-expectations and the requirements of specific tasks. Performance fluctuates based on how closely these elements align.

Three Parts of the Mind

Ancient philosophers and modern psychologists share the concept of a three-part mind with separate domains for thinking, feeling, and doing. The conative, or doing, part contains the striving instincts that drive a person’s natural way of taking action, or modus operandi (M.O.). This is the unique set of innate strengths and talents every person has which remains unchanged from birth. Everyone has an equal amount of conative energy for engaging the thinking (cognitive) and feeling (affective) parts of the mind to produce purposeful action.

Mental assessments look at different parts of the human mind. The Kolbe A™ Index is different because it is the only validated assessment of the conative part of the mind.

Kolbe Indexes identify an individual’s natural talents, the instinctive method of operation (M.O.) that enable a person to be productive. Kolbe Indexes are widely used in both educational and business settings.  Businesses apply the Index results to improve employee development, team management and hiring. The Kolbe A™ Index need only be taken once since these innate abilities do not change over time.

The most important word you’ve never heard of…

Conation is action derived from instinct; purposeful mode of striving, volition. It is a conscious effort to carry out self-determined acts.

The Latin ‘conatus‘, from which conation is derived, is defined as “any natural tendency, impulse, or directed effort.

Kolbe Wisdom™ and conation identify the nature of creative instincts and enable individuals to unleash the boundless power of their own natural instincts, their M.O.s (Modus Operandi), to:

  • Improve personal productivity
  • Enrich relationships
  • Become effective parents
  • Launch rewarding careers

Conative tests identify actions driven by innate, subconscious and instinctive patterns of human behavior.

Conative assessments show actions derived from instinct; purposeful modes of striving, volition, and conscious efforts to carry out self-determined acts.  The Kolbe Indexes are the only validated conative assessments available, and are based on over 35 years of research. They are designed to measure the conative faculty of the mind — the actions you take that result from your natural instincts.
